Photographing the Night Sky
The Milky Way with a basic camera and a tripod, and the arithmetic that decides your exposure. No tracking mount required to start.
Astrophotography looks like it needs specialist equipment. The first useful results need a camera with manual controls, a lens that opens reasonably wide, a tripod, and a dark location.
The equipment that matters
A tripod. Non-negotiable. Exposures are seconds long.
A lens that opens wide. f/2.8 or faster is ideal; f/4 works with compromises. Aperture matters more than the camera body.
A wide focal length. 14–24mm on full frame, or 10–16mm on a crop sensor. Wider lets you expose longer before stars trail.
Manual focus capability.
A remote release or the self-timer, so pressing the button does not shake the camera.
Warm clothes and a red torch. Both matter more than people expect.
Finding dark sky
This determines your result more than any equipment decision. The Milky Way is invisible from a city regardless of your camera.
Use a light pollution map to find somewhere dark within driving distance. A two-hour drive frequently makes the difference between nothing and a clear result.
Check the moon phase. A bright moon washes out the sky as effectively as a town. Shoot within a few days of new moon, or when the moon is below the horizon.
Check the season. The bright galactic core is visible in the evening sky during specific months depending on your latitude — broadly spring through early autumn in the northern hemisphere.
The exposure arithmetic
Aperture: as wide as the lens goes. Stop down one third of a stop if the corners are poor.
Sensitivity: start at ISO 3200. Higher than instinct suggests. Modern denoising handles the noise.
Shutter: limited by the earth's rotation. Stars trail if you expose too long.
A working rule: divide 500 by your focal length in full-frame equivalent terms. A 20mm lens gives roughly 25 seconds. This is approximate and generous — it tolerates slight trailing that is invisible at normal viewing size.
For sharper stars, use a stricter divisor, around 300, and accept a darker frame that you brighten later.
Focus manually on a bright star. Use live view, magnify to maximum, and adjust until the star is as small as possible. Autofocus will not work. Once focused, tape the ring — it drifts.
Shooting
Shoot raw. Essential. The processing latitude is the whole game.
Take many frames of the same composition. Ten to twenty identical exposures can be stacked later, which averages out noise and gives a dramatically cleaner result. This is the single biggest quality improvement available without new equipment.
Take some dark frames — the same exposure with the lens cap on — which stacking software uses to remove sensor artefacts.
Include foreground. A tree, a ridge, a building. A frame of only sky is less interesting than it sounds, and the foreground gives scale.
Light the foreground briefly with a dim torch during part of the exposure, or shoot a separate longer exposure for it and combine.
Processing
Stacking software aligns and averages your frames. Several capable options are free.
Then: raise exposure, control highlights, and be careful with white balance. Night sky raw files look grey and flat before processing; this is normal.
Reduce noise after stacking, not before.
Do not overdo saturation. The most common error in amateur astrophotography is aggressive colour that looks artificial.
What needs more equipment
A tracking mount counteracts the earth's rotation, allowing exposures of minutes rather than seconds. This is the next purchase and it changes what is possible.
A telescope for planets and deep-sky objects. A different discipline.
Planets specifically need long focal length and video capture rather than stills, and the technique is unlike wide-field work.
Realistic expectations
Your first attempt will be out of focus. Focus is the hardest part and everyone gets it wrong initially.
A good result from a dark site with a basic camera, twenty stacked frames and careful processing is genuinely impressive and costs nothing beyond a tripod and a drive.
Common first-attempt failures
Nearly everyone makes the same mistakes on the first outing, and knowing them in advance saves a wasted night.
Out of focus. The most common by a wide margin. Autofocus does not work on stars, and infinity on the lens barrel is usually not exactly right. Magnify a bright star in live view and adjust until it is smallest, then tape the ring.
Star trails from too long an exposure. Reduce the shutter time or use a wider lens.
Camera shake. Use the self-timer or a remote, and if the camera has a mirror, lock it up.
Too much light pollution. No processing recovers a sky that was orange to begin with. Drive further.
Shooting at the wrong time of year or with a bright moon. Check both before you go.
Batteries dying in the cold. Bring spares and keep them warm.
Dew on the lens after an hour. A cheap lens warmer or a plastic bag with a hand warmer solves it.
Shooting JPEG. There is no recovering the file afterwards.
